When I first became a mother, I will admit that Mother’s Day in my mind was mostly a day to express appreciation for mothers. How hard we have worked for the family, how much we give of ourselves, how much we will do in years to come…
But with maturity and life experience comes perspective, and my view of Mother’s Day has changed. After several more years of parenting behind me and especially after my miscarriage, Mother’s Day has become a day for me to celebrate motherhood as the true gift it is.
In honour of my friends who would like to have children but cannot, for those who have lost children, and for those who are in the midst of an incredibly challenging season of motherhood, let me not forget that being a mother is an enormous blessing and something that should not be taken for granted.
Even on the hard days… there are amazingly wonderful gifts to be cherished.
Each one of us has our own unique journey through motherhood, and we have so much to learn and gain from sharing our stories and our hearts with one another.
Recently I asked my readers on Facebook a question: What is your favourite thing about being a mother? Here were some of their answers:
“The overwhelming love and joy I get when I look at my children.” -Chelsea A.
“The innocence for sure. The cuddles, butterfly kisses and love you to the moon and back…” -Rachel
“Holding a little hand while we walk together. Building sandcastles again. Eating ice-cream cones.” -Colleen
“Watching the kids grow, watching their personalities start to come through and my 3.5 year old telling jokes! I just love watching them. They bring so much love and warmth to our house.” -Melissa
“The hundreds of hugs and kisses… and the unconditional I love you’s!” -Lua
“ That even at 17 my son still hugs and kisses me and picks me up (even if it is to prove he’s taller!) and doesn’t feel embarrassed by Mom.” -Irene
On this Mother’s Day, my wish is that I am truly grateful for the incredible love and gifts that come with being a mama.
